SaaS - Cloud Computing

There is more than one architectural type of SaaS based platform and these are split over 4 different levels. Level 1 being the most basic, to Level 4 being the most comprehensive. Intelligent Office is based on Level 4 architecture.

But what is SaaS?

There are three key areas that separate differing SaaS based applications. A good SaaS application is scalable, configurable and multi-tenant efficient.

Scalable: Having a scalable application enables the provider to maximise concurrency and use application resources more efficiently.

Multi-tenant Efficient: An architecture that maximises the sharing of resources across tenants, but is still able to differentiate data belonging to different customers.

Configurable: If a single application, housed within a single server has to accommodate users from several different companies at once, you are unable to write custom code to adapt the end user experience. Anything you do to adapt or amend the application for one user will change the application for others. Therefore, rather than adapting the application in the traditional sense, each user configures the way the application appears and behaves for them. Generally, the challenge for providers is to ensure that the task of configuring applications is made as simple as possible, without incurring additional development or operation costs for each individual configuration.

Level 4 is scalable, configurable and Multi-Tenant efficient, but what exactly does that mean? In essence, scalability can be achieved using multitier architecture, which is composed of a variable number of servers and load-balancers. The vendor can also increase the system capacity, if required, to match demand without the need to alter any application software architecture.
