I’ve been reading with interest what the pundits are predicting for the housing market in 2011. It varies from a 20% drop in house prices to a 4% increase but most seem to believe interest rates will rise to about 2% by the end of 2011.

Did you have a great Christmas and a good break? Did your friends, family and neighbours all get along or are you glad that it’s all over?
I hope if you were lucky enough to receive gifts, they were ones you had been longing for or, indeed, something that had a great deal of thought put into it.
20 December 2010
The retail industry recently revealed that December 18 is the day when allegedly men decide it’s the right time to buy their partner the Christmas gift they’ve always wanted.
I was listening to a radio programme the other day, when chaps were ringing up with their last minute Christmas purchases for their loved one over the years which had included a vacuum cleaner, plastic flowers and a fridge. Most of them said they ended up cooking the Christmas lunch after handing their gifts over. One thing they all had in common was that never again were they going to leave it to the last minute but take time to think about the person and what would be the right gift.

There's a danger with IT that we forget what this business is all about, so I started my speech with the fact that the mortgage broker industry is a people business. It's all about how you interact with clients in person, over the phone or in writing.

What happens if you are running a business and one of your sales people decides to leave? Hopefully there will be a notice period to allow a handover but if they just go what happens to all the business in their pipeline and client records?
Client-facing personnel don't even have to leave for chaos to reign. With the season of coughs and colds looming, if a team member is off work for just one day it could mean they fail to action something they promised a client and a whole stack of cards can come tumbling down.

When I think about some of the odd rules and regulations that are introduced through Parliament to make our country a safer place I often laugh.
As we approach autumn, one topical new rule in many local authorities is the banning of playing conkers in schools as it’s considered too dangerous. I have no idea what my son, who has 359, is going to do with his collection.

Heads you win, tails you win - you may think I’m referring to the life of a banker, and my blood pressure does indeed rise thinking about the bonuses some are considering awarding themselves.
But actually I’m referring to the benefits of selecting the right IT system. Years ago I was convinced by an IT consultant working for me that having a bespoke system was the only way to get what our business needed at the time - a unique offering.

26 April 2010
With so many technology systems on the market it is important that the system you buy is right for your business and that the provider is able to support you and your employees from the outset.
It is well known that the human mind is reluctant to change and the financial services market is no different. But in a market that has been hard hit by cost restraints due to the downturn, training and support departments are often the first to suffer.

Flexibility in adviser technology has never been more important. With the double whammy of RDR and the global economic turmoil, businesses are realising that they need much more from their chosen software provider than ever before. This refers in equal measure to requiring constantly evolving functionality from software platforms and also ensuring the flexibility of the software provider to work with the adviser without the necessit of tying in to multi-year contracts.

The professional standards demanded by the RDR are extremely challenging to IFAs – especially so as many have seen their workload soar in light of new administrative processes and compliance burdens. To manage this time effectively, careful and considered planning is needed to ensure that all adviser qualifications are achieved in time for the strict 2012 deadline. All organisations - large and small - need to be sure that they have dedicated adequate time, effort and resource to this, with built-in contingency for examretakes. Failing to do so will mean that they are unable to advise and so effectively unable
to earn.
1 February 2010
There are many factors that the mortgage professional should take into account when acquiring a client management system.
